Universities in global south aim to end reliance on western experts

A cooperative of developing-world universities aim will share curricula on climate change, reducing the need for consultants from wealthy countries Universities from the world’s least developed countries have launched a cooperative programme aimed at ending their dependence on climate experts and expensive consultants from rich countries.
Under the Least Developed Countries Universities Consortium for Climate Change (LUCCC) each university will develop a curriculum on a designated theme, which will then be shared throughout the network.
Out of the 48, universities from 10 countries are participating so far: Nepal, Tanzania, Sudan, Bhutan, Mozambique, Uganda, Bangladesh, Gambia, Ethiopia and Senegal.
“What used to happen was that consultants from developed countries would fly to developing countries to do training and research on climate change,” said Saleemul Huq, director of the International Centre for Climate Change and Development at the Independent University of Bangladesh.
“The LDCs challenged this in Paris because we need to strengthen the capacity of our own institutions to do research and provide training at national level, a long-term intervention.” He said it was shortsighted to pay again and again to import skills from developed countries when every country has one or more universities with the ability to train and conduct research that can empower its citizens.
“We may have little resources but it doesn’t mean we don’t have resources at all,” he said.
“For now the institutions are sharing information and that doesn’t require funding.” It is not just the university students that will benefit but also the communities impacted by climate change, according to David Mfitumukiza, a senior lecturer at Makerere University in Uganda.
“It’s the communities that are impacted by climate change and they need to be armed with knowledge to help them cope with the impacts,” he said.
LUCCC was launched on the first day of the 11th International Conference on Community-based Adaptation which also took place in Kampala.
LUCCC also aims to provide research that can galvanise the voice of LDCs in international climate negotiations, where they are ofter outgunned by western countries with enormous scientific and academic institutions to call on.

From Detroit to St Louis to Chicago, daily record high temperatures were set in 2012, making it the hottest 4th of July on record.
The map below shows the highest temperature on record for the 4th of July (ranging through various years).
Other notably hot July 4th records include New York City, where the temperature soared to an oppressive 102 at Central Park in the year 1949.

Food stamps worth double at Pendleton Farmers Market this month.
Food stamps will literally go further than they used to at the Pendleton Farmers Market.
During July, the market and Umatilla County Public Health will offer up to $10 in matching funds for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program recipients who buy fruits, vegetables and other unprepared foods at the weekly market.
The assessment resulted in a $2,000 grant from the food bank and the county’s health department.
The Pendleton Farmers Market is the only farmers market in Umatilla and Morrow counties that accepts a SNAP card, although the county is also providing funding to the Milton-Freewater Farmers Market to acquire a card machine.
Even though the SNAP match program will close at the end of the month or when the grant funding runs out, McCune said it was an important promotional tool to inform the community that the market accepts food stamps.
The USDA has found that $1.84 in gross domestic product is produced for every dollar of SNAP benefits.
McCune said SNAP enjoys support from local food vendors because it allows them to expand their customer base.
The market is 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. every Friday on the 300 block of South Main Street.

“The members built the hall on the land with their own resources, time and talent.
We are continuing in their spirit,” said Zink.
We developed our own version of that and got excited about the plural — guilds — because this community is ripe with talent and skills that are attainable and teachable, and they can all connect around our organization and that may be good for the community,” said Zink.
Advertisement Within the Paradise organization there are several special interest guilds: Gardening The Gardening Guild promotes organic gardening through two gardens on the Chapel Drive campus.
Later in the month Christian singer-song writer and Grammy nominee Pam Mark Hall will perform.
This event provides the opportunity for local artists to share their music, poetry, comedy and “other stage entertainments” with the public.
The Paradise Community Guilds has 35 members but Zink said it’s not necessary to be a member to be part of the organization.

Advertising company faces lawsuits for promoting Monsanto’s Roundup (glyphosate) weed killer as safe.
Monsanto is a former client of Osborn & Barr, and the plaintiffs’ filing alleges that their deceptive marketing practices promoted Roundup as a product that bore “no unreasonable risks to human health or the environment,” and that the firm pushed this mantra for approximately 20 years.
The lawsuits were filed in mid-March at the 22nd Circuit Court in St. Louis against Creve Coeur-based Monsanto, and Osborn & Barr was named as a co-defendant thanks to their role in the promotion of the glyphosate-based herbicide.
As St. Louis Today explains, existing laws primarily focus on holding Monsanto, the toxic chemical’s manufacturer, responsible for cancer and other adverse effects caused by their product.
Including the advertising agency that helped make Roundup the prolific herbicide that it has become is a new approach in legal battles — one that could leave a lasting impact.
In 2014, the Environmental Working Group reported on a study that showed exposure to glyphosate doubled the risk of lymphoma.
The filing by the plaintiffs also alleges that Osborn & Barr promoted Roundup as being “safer than table salt” and “practically nontoxic” in ads that were actually banned in the state of New York during the 1990s for their misleading claims.
Monsanto has refuted these claims as well.
Scott Partridge, Monsanto’s vice president of global strategy told St. Louis Today that the plaintiffs were only targeting Osborn & Barr because their lawyers were having trouble “confronting the 800 studies and the monumental evidence that demonstrates that glyphosate does not cause cancer.” But how many of those studies were conducted or otherwise manipulated by Monsanto or other members of the industry?
Over 700 claims of cancer in relation to Monsanto’s herbicide have been filed in both state and federal courts.

China, whose emissions already dwarf the USA, demonstrated how they think the Paris Agreement is a joke, when they announced a colossal 20% increase in coal capacity in the next 3 years November last year.
As for Hawking’s claim we could end up like Venus, a statement without evidence, even from someone with Stephen Hawking’s reputation or from the IPCC, is no more valid than a prognostication provided by a psychic gazing into a crystal ball.
The Earth has experienced far higher CO2 levels than the present day.
At most we shall add a few hundred more PPM CO2 to our atmosphere.

Ms. Merkel, the EU, and the larger multinational global interests therein, fear Trump… and for good reason, he’s winning.
However, those who control the levers of multinational power are paying very close attention.
You cannot overemphasize how strong these positions are.
America has already passed the goal of “energy independence”.
We ran past the goal of energy independence so fast, that no-body seemingly noticed it.
President Trump’s economic team is now selling energy as an economic export product.
Our national GDP has always been based on the fact we create energy products (oil, gas, coal, renewable etc.
Those dollars come from your pocket (gas prices mostly).

Trump administration’s energy plans just faced another loss.. On Monday, a federal appeals court ruled against the Environmental Protection Agency’s postponement of a rule to regulate methane from oil and gas wells.
The EPA said its May deferral was designed to give industry more time to comment on the regulation.
Environmental groups including the Sierra Club and the Environmental Defense Fund sued the EPA after the agency’s delay.
Judges sided with environmentalists and said “industry groups had ample opportunity to comment,” adding that some of those comments had been incorporated into the final rule.
The Obama-era regulation would cut pollution of methane, a greenhouse gas more potent than CO2, from new oil and gas wells.
At the time, industry and several states — including Oklahoma under then-Attorney General Scott Pruitt — said the rule placed undue burden on oil and gas producers.
After the decision, the agency says it’s assessing its options, but the ruling comes as another strike against Trump’s attempted attacks on Obama’s environmental legacy.
